Wirat sat at a desk that featured two bowls of soup. She stood because there wasn’t another chair in the room. He picked up a bowl of soup, opened the lid, and blew across the top. The aroma of boiled meat tickled her nose. Her stomach gurgled.

Wirat shook his head. “Someone’s hungry.” He slurped from the bowl. “Amazing. The kitchen outdid themselves tonight. Too bad you won’t get to taste it.” He regarded her from behind the bowl. “You broke the rules. You know what that means.” He slurped from the bowl again.

“How bad can it be?” Casey asked as she shifted her weight from foot to foot. She took a deep breath and thrust her chin out at him, calm in the face of the coming storm.

Wirat shrugged. “You’ll see.” He considered saying more, but slurped from his bowl instead. Despite himself, he enjoyed this part. Seeing the ungainly giant transform into a silent, stealthy hunter amazed him every time. Wirat waited for Casey to sense what was coming. He watched as she felt Boonpeng’s approach. She expected him to announce Boonpeng’s arrival. Her eyes widened just as Boonpeng’s huge hand covered her face. Boonpeng lifted her into the air and vanished from the room.

Wirat slurped at the soup. “You can come out now.” Nutcha stepped into the office from a closet. “You shouldn’t feel bad. She broke the rules.” He produced a stool from behind his desk and placed it in front of the second bowl of soup. “Sit. You’ve earned your meal. Let’s talk about your future.”
